The Boys Are Back in Town & Oden Update

We’re a couple days behind but hey, if you’re catching up like us, then this is news. This Jason Quick article from the Oregonian reveals some exciting info. Almost all the Blazers are back in Portland and ready to get some scrimmages and team workouts going. Training camp does not officially start until September 30th so its nice to see the dedication to the team these guys are showing off. The only players that are MIA are Outlaw, Pryz, Ike, Rudy and Raef. However, according to the article, Nate expects all but Rudy to be back sometime this week. Rudy is going to be on a well deserved break after Spain’s Silver medal finish in Beijing.

The other good news is that Oden has just started to participate in 5 on 5 scrimmages. These are the first such scrimmages since we heard the dreadful news that he’d be out an entire season last year.

If you’re like me, then you are excited and optimistic with these latest developments. To have the entire team together a whole month before training camp even starts is great news to hear indeed. That gives the team a little under two months before their season opener against the Lakers in LA. I can’t wait.

Short Term Blazers: The Ha Seung Jin Edition

If you don’t remember who Ha Seung Jin was, I truly cannot blame you. His one claim to fame is probably the fact that he was the first Korean in history to be drafted into the NBA. His claims to shame are probably his ugly face, awkward body and terrible basketball skills. Normally, the Short Term Blazers posts are cheery and starry-eyed memories of Blazers past with short stints in Portland. This one however, is going to be abnormal.

Ha Seung Jin stunk. His career-high was 13 points and only ever played 46 games across 3 seasons. He was terrible, there’s no ifs-and-buts about it. The one perhaps good thing I have to say about him is the fact that he visited my parents’ restaurant pretty regularly while he was in Portland. My Mom even has photos with him. Really.

Besides maybe paying for a few bills for my family, I’m still in disbelief that any team wasted a pick on this guy, let alone my beloved Blazers. You wanna know the really funny thing though? Someone at Nike decided it was a good idea to sign Ha to a 5-year deal. Hilarious.

Don’t get me wrong though, I don’t have ill-will towards the guy. It’s not like I want him to never have a basketball career or anything. I just never want him to set foot on a NBA floor again.

Steven Hill Gets No Love

The debate can go on if Steven Hill, Tatum or Jackson will get the 15th roster spot (they have all been given unguaranteed contracts to come to training camp). I was just looking at the roster over on ESPN, Tatum is listed as a G, Jackson as SF. What is Hill listed as? IR. Yes, he is actually listed as “Injured Reserve.” He is a center by trade, but apparently, his real position is IR. I just thought it was funny…

Is LaMarcus Aldrige Untouchable?

The story of this season will be Greg Oden and Brandon Roy, but there is one other piece of the “big three.” That piece of course is LaMarcus Aldrige.

I want to start off by saying that I don’t think Aldrige will be traded and that there is no way he will not be a Blazer for years to come. My question is: Is LaMarcus Aldrige untouchable? If that one in a million trade offer came for an elite power forward, would the team have to pull the trigger?

Tim Duncan is, in my opinion, the best PF in the league. He is getting older but is still very productive. Beyond his low post skills and that bank shot he lives off, Duncan has the intangible that he is a winner. Duncan will end his playing days as a Spur, but if he was offered for Aldridge, I would have to turn down the deal. It’s not that Duncan is past his prime, or that he wouldn’t fit in with the team, because he would be a perfect, unselfish veteran… The fact is that Aldridge has too much potential. I don’t care about making the playoffs this year, I care about winning a championship. If you added Duncan, the Blazers would be a lock to make the playoffs, but still not the favorite to come out of the West.

In my mind, Aldridge is untouchable.* He is a great player and continues to improve. He is the perfect offensive match to Oden’s defense. The post positions are solid for the Blazers for the next 5-10 years. I can see Aldridge performing better than Oden and even Roy statistically. With focus on Oden, Aldridge could emerge as the leading scorer. I would still contend that Oden might be more important to the franchise, but I think Aldrige is more important to actually winning games.

* The one trade offer that you have to consider is Garnett. Still, I like Aldrige, but that would be tempting.

So what do you guys think? Is Aldridge untouchable? Do you deal him for a Chris Bosh or Carlos Boozer? What about someone like Carmelo Anthony who may be in the market soon?

(I am excluding the obvious trade for Lebron James, he is the only true untouchable player)

Position by Position Analysis: Power Forward

Starter: LaMarcus Aldridge
Backup: Channing Frye
Backup: Ike Diogu

Much like the center position, the key at power forward for the Blazers is depth. Both Aldridge and Frye would probably start on most NBA teams. Heck, Diogu might even start or see actual minutes on a few NBA teams. Aldridge will be the starter all season, there is no a threat from Frye to take that role. As Aldridge continues to develop, I see him playing 35 minutes a game. That might sound like a long time, but he’ll prove that he has the stamina and ability to justify that amount of playing time. I see him being a guy who can get 20 points a night with some consistency. The center position (Oden or Przybilla) will do the bulk of the rebounding, which works well with Aldridge since that is his weak spot. He will really become the offensive threat in the “Twin Towers.”

The depth for the Blazers in the power forward position comes down to how far Frye has developed this summer. He has been working out in Portland with Oden, as seen in some of the released videos. He hasn’t spent all summer in Portland, there are sightings of him and Bayless down in Tucson, AZ.

I see Aldridge getting a lot of focus once Oden goes out of the game. And I do see plenty of times when Aldridge is in the game without Oden. Like I mentioned in the “centers” post, I don’t see Oden playing over 20 minutes a game, especially at the start of the season. He will be slowly introduced to the offense and see more minutes, but Aldridge will be a go to guy on night one. Frye can also step up on day one. My issue with Frye is consistency. I know he is capable of going for 20 a night, but those nights are rare and extremely inconsistent. I think he will be used much like he was last season, if he comes out shooting (which he will) and is off, Nate will pull him and he will all but be done for the game.

So who goes in for Frye? Our new addition, Ike Diogu. I haven’t seen Diogu play much in the NBA, because well…he hasn’t played much in the NBA. But I do remember him tearing it up in college. He was a huge star at Arizona State University. He’s small, at only 6′8″ for a power forward, but he is a solid 250lbs. He averaged about 6 points (5.6) in 10 minutes per game last season with the Indiana Pacers. That’s not terrible production, and with a solid “true” center in Przybilla (since Przybilla will probably be in the game when Diogu sees the majority of his minutes), Diogu will be able to play more of a floating power forward role. The pressure won’t be on him to crash the boards, that will go on Przybilla. I don’t see Diogu playing that influential of a role for the season, but I can see him being the difference in 2-3 games. That alone is worth it to bring him in and give him a chance.

LaMarcus Aldridge is going to emerge this year as a premium power forward in the NBA. He and Oden will begin to show what a dominant force they will be in the future. I don’t know if there is any team that can match up with Portland for 48 minutes at either the power forward or center position, let alone both.

Manu Ginobili to have ankle surgery

This is pretty big, although maybe not totally unexpected news. The San Antonio Spurs guard will have surgery on his ankle. While playing for Argentina in the Olympics, Ginobili re-injured a ligament injury in his left ankle.

“They’re going to operate on me,” the 31-year-old Ginobili told Argentina’s La Nation newspaper Friday. “It’s not worse, which is important. Now, the thing is, it’s not better either, and it seems like the only way to repair it completely is arthroscopic surgery.”

The Spurs did not want Ginobili to play in the Olympics unless he was 100%. He chose country over club and played (and carried the flag).

“My plan was to be part of the Olympic games, and I knew that if I suffered from pain they would have to operate,” Ginobili told the newspaper. “This isn’t something that took me by surprise.”

The injury has been persistent for Ginobili, showing obvious pain in the Western Conference finals. An MRI has shown the ankle is not improving, thus surgery is needed.

No time table has been released for his return.

News I’m Too Lazy to Write Complete Posts About:

1. The Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly signed the 7′ 2″ Iranian center Hamad Haddadi.

The article says that he played in the Iranian SUPER League. The SUPER league. Why can’t America have cool leagues like that? The American SUPER League of Basketball…the ASLB. I like it.

2. The Behind the Blazers Beat blog just posted an article about how impressed Nate McMillan was with Rudy’s Fernandez’s performance at the Olympics. Here’s an excerpt:

“I was so impressed with him that it was to the point where after the second time I saw him, I didn’t sleep that night because I was moving my rotations around,” McMillan said. “I swear I did not sleep. I could not sleep thinking about him. Because I’m saying, ‘We can put him here, do this with him, do that with him and Brandon (Roy), and do this… So he’s playing for us. Oh yeah. I see that right now.”

Rudy gives Nate McMillan sleepless nights. Full article.

Funny but mean. Still funny though.
